In this season of Advent we once again remember the coming of IMMANUEL, “God with us”. We invite you to join us in a practice of intentionally being with Him during this season with a simple devotional each evening in your own home. Here’s a simple framework to help you get started.
LIGHT A CANDLE. Round up the family, dim the lights, and light a candle - but one you will only use for this special time.
READ A BRIEF SCRIPTURE PASSAGE. Based on your family’s stage, select a version of the reading plan below. Simply read the passage or story.
WORSHIP. Just listen to or sing along with one of your favorite Christmas songs. Consider creating a playlist to work from through the season.
PRAY. Offer a simple prayer of thanks for the blessings of the day.
A FINAL BIT OF ENCOURAGEMENT
OK, let’s be real. For many of us this is something new and completely out of our normal family rhythm. And some of you might even be a bit intimidated by the thought of reading Scripture as a family or praying out loud. So it might feel a little awkward for you at first. But don't be afraid. Go for it in faith and you will be blessed!
Know that this doesn't have to be complicated. You're not giving a dissertation on the incarnation. So just keep it short and simple. The cumulative effect of consistently doing this over the season will likely have more power than any single devotional.
If you fall off the wagon and miss a few nights, don’t give up on the whole thing. And don’t be overwhelmed with trying to play catch-up in the reading. Just jump back in with the reading for the current day.
If you have younger kids, it’s going to be chaotic, and it's going to be beautiful all at the same time! If you get frustrated because it seems like they're in la-la land or just not "getting it", don't give up. The experience as a family will shape them just as much as any bit of content. Remember...you're not going for perfection, but practice!
